Smoke, smoke everywhere. We don’t like it, and for good reasons. Besides the coughs and itchy eyes it contains toxic gases, heavy metals, and harmful particulate matter, especially black carbon which is detrimental to the heart and lungs. So besides leaving this area for someplace where the air is like Hayfork’s usually good air, we can do much. One of those measures is to eat detoxifying foods that help one’s body rid itself of these poisons. Another is to eat food that strengthens our bodies especially our immune systems. Not only is this food readily available, but eating it does both things and also contributes to the health of the Earth. Plus those of a religious bent may recognize this as the sort of diet that the Creator made for humans—and other creatures—as recorded in the very first chapter of the Bible. It is a raw vegan diet. Moreover the largest scientific study on diet and health in the world, involving literally millions of people, concluded that the plant diet is the best diet for achieving a healthy long life.
But we may wonder why it is best and how to incorporate this kind of eating into our own diet. Barry Boullon studied this at the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute and has been personally applying this knowledge. He will be enthusiastically sharing some of what he knows with us at the next Hayfork Cooperative meeting Tuesday, August 18 at Northern Delights Coffeehouse from 7 to 9 pm. In his talk “Why Raw” Barry will touch on: the effects of cooking on different nutrients; where you get your protein on the raw food diet; the raw food groups; food combining for better digestion; how to maintain your ideal weight; how to adapt to a raw food diet; and how to make raw food preparation quick and easy. He will top this off with some samples of a decadent raw dessert to try. Time for questions and discussion will be included
Living with fire we have learned new things and have applied old knowledge. Some time will be dedicated to sharing such tips with one another, helpful resources, prior preparations and other insights about how to live well and healthily in these conditions. So do come for Barry Boullon’s informative presentation at Northern Delights, 7091 state highway 3 in Hayfork, on Tuesday, August 18 from 7-10 pm. This free event is open to the public. We hope to see you there.
