Come say good-bye to official summer and hello to Fall with Hayfork Cooperative and a good "well grounded" presentation.
Tom Patton of Shasta Valley Soil will be leading a fun and fast paced discussion of the concepts of classic soil science and the application of organic nutrients at the September Hayfork Cooperative meeting. Tom’s discussion of soil science fundamentals for the organic gardener will provide a “behind the scenes” look at what plants eat, what keeps them healthy, and the use of soil testing and analysis. He will also provide a glimpse at the latest advances in plant science research. The goal of his discussion is to reduce some of the mystery of soil science and provide a foundation that gardeners can use to develop their own soil fertility strategy. Hayfork Cooperative applauds this kind of approach to our precious land here where too often huge amounts of soils laced with industrial waste and toxic chemicals are imported and spread on Trinity’s topsoil and left to wash into surface waters with winter rains.
Tom Patton’s Shasta Valley Soil is an organic soil production company operating on a 200-acre family farm in the Little Shasta Valley in central Siskiyou County. The company goal is to provide high quality blended soil based on organic nutrients and a solid understanding of modern soil science concepts.
Founder Tom Patton is a self-avowed science nerd with a degree in Construction Engineering and Industrial Engineering from Montana State University who has worked extensively in the western US building highway and airport construction projects. As a Humboldt County native, he was pleased to return to Northern California ten years ago to pursue his passion of small-scale farming and the use of organic nutrients in modern agriculture. Do come to learn more about this very relevant issue to Trinity County’s health.
