Come to Hayfork Cooperative’s Wednesday, November 20, 7-9 pm meeting at Northern Delights Coffeehouse, 7091 St. Hwy. 3 in Hayfork to learn more about who the Hmong are. Many of us know they came from China long ago and later moved south to what is now Viet Nam and the surrounding area. While there they aided the USA in the Viet Nam war and when we abruptly withdrew some Hmong were brought to America. More recently some Hmong have moved to Trinity. Two of them, Yer Xiong and Choua Yang, are now happy to be residents of the Hayfork area. Many here know these women and their tasty Hmong food of their Let’s Roll! LLC business now open weekdays in the Northern Delights Coffeehouse kitchen.
Besides being good cooks, Yer and Choua are accomplished women. Choua Yang was born in a Thai refugee camp and when she was 9 her family came to Minneapolis, MN. She completed high school, 3 years of nursing school, worked in the nonprofit sector, and become a Disaster Relief Coordinator for the Red Cross. Yer Xiong’s earliest years were also marked with war and persecution, and as a refugee she made it to Minneapolis when she was 11 years old. Although she knew only two English words when she started school—“yes and no”—she went on to get her Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Masters of Public Administration (MPA). Xiong worked in the non-profit and public sectors for more than 20 years and then as a Management Analyst for the Department of Human Services, State of Minnesota.
Yer Xiong and Choua Yang will begin their presentation with a brief background of the Hmong and their personal experiences of escaping from war, life here in the US, and now in Hayfork. They will discuss the very important and extensive structure of their family, and the Hmong emphasis on education. Here in Hayfork we have seen some of the results when recently two Hmong women students were Hayfork High’s valedictorian and salutatorian. Other aspects of their culture and traditions will be topics, including their fine, symbolic, amazing embroidery:paj ntaub. Come with your questions, there will be a Q and A session at the end. Join us for this free event open to all, for an informative evening with these two lovely ladies.
