Here in Trinity County we live in the ‘woods’. We all know wood can burn, and many of us use the bounty around us as ‘fire wood’ to heat our homes, some even to cook meals. We also know that ‘wild fires’ sometimes burn the woods around us, threatening our buildings and communities. And for decades in the recent past we sought to put out all wildfires. But we are learning—and some folks knew all along-that fire is an important part of maintaining healthy ‘woods’ where wildfires rarely turn into catastrophic events. We are now learning how to live with and even to use fire to ease the fuel load and help restore our ecosystem to a healthy, vibrant and productive state.
One person who grew up in Hayfork took note of this and has gone on to learn much more about how to use fire to contribute to the well being of our communities, resources and the lives we have chosen to live in this quite special place. She is Lenya Quinn-Davidson and is now the Director of the Northern California Prescribed Fire Council. Its mission is to serve as a venue for practitioners, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, tribes, coalitions and interested individuals to work collaboratively to promote, protect, and expand the responsible use of prescribed fire in Northern California's fire adapted landscapes. She just helped to organize and lead prescribed fire training sessions for 30 participants, which included extensive work on camp Bar 717 Ranch in Hyampom.
Come meet with and learn from this fine young woman at the next Hayfork Cooperative meeting on Tuesday, November 19th, at 7 pm at Northern Delights coffeehouse in Hayfork. Bring your questions and comments. Lenya will also be showing an excellent documentary, Catching Fire, mostly filmed in the Trinity River basin. It tells a compelling story of how a committed group from across the North State are learning and teaching insights on how our relationship to fire can be restored through the strategic use of fire as a powerful management tool.
This is a free presentation and is an important one for us folks living in these woods.
